The Use of Multiple Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer Systems

1. Introduction
This knowledgebase article has been written to help users understand the possible effects of changing between Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer systems during a monitoring program.


2. Implications of Using Multiple Inclinometers

Inclinometer Systems are designed to demonstrate displacements relative to an initial reference data set. Sometimes referred to as a base reading or datum reading. Ideally if two systems are to be used on one borehole, both systems will be used for obtaining the initial data set. This is achieved by performing multiple readings with both systems, prior to any displacement influencing work taking place on site. With multiple readings collected from both systems these should be averaged to generate a singular initial data set for the borehole in question. In situations where the initial data set cannot and has not been generated using the second system, Soil Instruments present the following findings to helps the user understand the possible effects of switching to a new Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer System


The deflection graph below shows singular data sets from 80 newly manufactured Digital Inclinometer Systems. These data sets or surveys have been recorded within a 25 metre deep test borehole located on Soil Instruments premises over a period of 20 months. It should be noted that this borehole is a real life borehole that is subjected to common natural influences such as, changes in daily and annual weather conditions which presents influences on the casings horizontal displacement and surveys being recorded by multiple users inducing possible variations in monitoring technique. All of which will contribute to pushing the recorded tolerance to the extremities expected.


The results from the below surveys demonstrate that Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer Systems are comparable on the A axis to approximately ±2mm over a 25 metre borehole from manufacture.


With each individual Inclinometer system having a stated system accuracy of ±2mm over a 25 metre borehole from the initial data set on the same system, it is encouraging to see that multiple systems manufactured independently of each other by Soil Instruments have a comparative end result.

 

 

Please note the above has been found with newly manufactured Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer System and will not apply when switching to other manufacturers' Inclinometer systems. Also the above may not apply if the Soil Instruments Digital Inclinometer system has not been correctly maintained, serviced and calibrated.
