1. Introduction HPG_Port is a software program produced by itmsoil Instruments Ltd for use with a Archer PDA and the S17 Digital Hydrostatic Profile Gauge. These instructions will aid installation of the program onto a Archer PDA. 2. PDA 'Soft Reset' If problems are experienced during the use of the PDA, such as an error message or the PDA freezes a safe option is a ‘Soft Reset’. If the PDA fails to operate after a soft reset, a last resort is to start again with clean and fresh PDA by performing a ‘Hard Reset’. Please consult itmsoil Instruments as your fault maybe simple and easily resolved without completing a ‘Hard Reset’.
To complete a ‘soft reset’ please perform the following step:
The PDA will switch off and after a few seconds reboot and restart. The soft reset is now complete.
3. PDA ‘Hard Reset’ If problems are experienced with the use of the PDA, which are unable to be resolved with a soft reset or reinstallation of the software, as a last resort a hard reset can be performed. Please consult itmsoil Instruments as your fault maybe simple and easily resolved without completing a ‘Hard Reset'. The hard reset will clear everything on PDA and restore the PDA to the factory settings, so any personal data should be backed up first. Your HPG_Port database 'DB_HPG2.sdf' will be safe on the Compact Flash ‘SD Card’ along with the reinstallation software for HPG_Port. To complete a ‘Hard reset’ please perform the following
The ‘Hard Reset’ will now be complete.
4. Preparing the PDA PDA’s supplied direct from itmsoil Instruments will already be configured for use. If you have completed a Hard Reset, the PDA will return to its default settings and will require preparations as follows. Setting the time & date
Setting the Regional Settings
‘English (United Kingdom)’ is required to be set for software compatibility. The PDA will require restarting for changes to take effect. Customising the start menu
The PDA is now fully prepared for the installation. 5. How to backup your survey setup, database ‘DB_HPG2.sdf’ Re-Installing the HPG_Port software onto the PDA will overwrite the pervious installation of HPG_Port and replace your database with a new blank database. If you wish to save the original database which contains your defined site names and boreholes, it must be backed up as described below. itmsoil Instruments recommend regularly performing a backup of the database as a precautionary measure.
The configuration and software used to browse the PDA may vary depending on your computers setup. Windows Vista and above commonly has a built in interface. Windows operating systems predating Vista, will require active sync to be installed.
You have now successfully backed up the In-Port database containing all your survey setup. You can now disconnect the PDA from the PC.
6. Copying new HPG_Port files to the PDA If you wish to upgrade to the latest version of HPG_Port please copy the files supplied by itmsoil Instruments onto your PDAs SD Card.
As an end result you will be left with two files, ‘HPG_PORT.cab’ and 'sqlce30.ppc.wce4.armv4.cab'
7. Re-installing or repairing HPG_Port This process will install a new copy of the HPG_Port software onto the PDA. This will over write any original software and create a new empty database on the PDA’s SD Card. If you wish to save the original database with your defined site names and boreholes, it must be backed up as described in section 4 above. Sqlce30.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB’ and ‘HPG_PORT.CAB’ must be on the ‘SD Card’ to complete an installation. If these files are not present or you suspect they need replacing please follow section 5 above.
The PDA will restart. SQL Mobile 2005 installation is now complete. Please navigate back to the ‘SD Card’ to continue
HPG_Port is now successfully installed on your PDA. If there is a previous database which needs to be restored please continue to the next step. If not please go to section 8. If restoring a database you will require to have the original backup file available on the PC to which the PDA will be connected.
8. Configuring the PDA Bluetooth with an HPG System The connections using Bluetooth are configured and controlled with the ‘Wireless Manager’ on the PDA. This can be accessed by clicking on the Bluetooth icon under the date and time or by selecting Start/Settings/Connections/Wireless Manager. The Bluetooth is switched on and off within the ‘Wireless Manager’ by tapping on the Bluetooth button, under this is will display ‘on’ or ‘off’ Within the wireless manager the configuration of the Bluetooth connection can be access from the menu at the bottom right and Bluetooth settings. The Archer can have multiple instruments listed under ‘Devices’ Tab. However, the PDA can only be configured to connect with one instrument at a time. This is defined under the ‘Com Ports’ tab and can be changed to connect to another HPG or Bluetooth device when you require. 8.1 Adding an HPG to the ‘Device list’
Displayed will be all the Bluetooth devices used with the PDA. You can have multiple items listed without causing problems.

The HPG Serial number will now be displayed and the Bluetooth configuration is now complete.
9. Final function check of software installation The following is to ensure the PDA operates and interacts correctly with the HPG. For completing a HPG survey of a borehole, please consult the product manual or contact your supplier for training.
If the program has already been used it will only be displayed within the Start menu.
Before proceeding confirm the HPG is switched on.
The PDA will now connect to the HPG as configured in the Bluetooth settings. There will be a short wait while the PDA retrieves the probes calibration factors.
Note the HPG ‘Comms Ready’ blue LED should now be illuminated and the Probe serial number will be displayed on the PDA screen.
The HPG reel buzzer will beep once to confirm the probe is taking a reading. Shortly afterwards it will then double beep to confirm the reading is complete. The PDA will then display a reading and the depth will change to the next depth to be read.
The function check and PDA software installation is now complete.
